Esplanade Park

Background

Esplanade Park was built in 1943. This was to make the central business district of Singapore more prominent and to develop a stronger sense of Singaporean identity by placing several iconic landmarks significant in Singapore's heritage in the park. The landmarks include the Indian Army Marker, the Cenotaph, the Lim Bo Seng Memorial and the Tan Kim Seng Fountain.

Indian Army Marker

This replica of the original monument was built in 1995 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of WW2's end. The original marker was built as a monument of the founding of the India National Army, an army formed with the help of the Japanese to liberate India.

The Cenotaph

The Cenotaph was built to commemorate those who had died in World Wars I and II and sacrificed themselves for the war efforts.

Lim Bo Seng Memorial

This monument was built in remembrance of Lim Bo Seng, a businessman who had fought against the Japanese during World War II. He was eventually captured and killed by the Japanese.

Tan Kim Seng Fountain

The Tan Kim Seng fountain was built as a monument to commemorate Tan Kim Seng, a wealthy businessman who had become a high-ranking government official and helped Singapore to develop. He donated generously to the community.
